In typical Via G. Li Volsi s`innalza the Carmine church, originally annexed to the ancient monastery of SS.ma Annunziata (Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel), which is accessed with a large and impressive staircase.
According to ms of Provencal, by tradition, the monastery was built in about ... nell`800, the time when the city was located just around the castle around the monastery there was a very thick forest from which you took the wood for the ceiling, and it said the monastery was originally called hermitage of Carmine.
Also, thanks to the Provencal, we know that ... in 1660, in the chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, was read on a stone the date 1125, a time when the factory was finished probably the first church.
Then enlarged around 1249, in 1650 the convent (still incomplete) consisted of 12 cells, while the church had 10 chapels.
The original monastery was then partially demolished in 1929 to make way all`attuale middle school "Dante Alighieri", while the church was restored after the Second World War, was reopened for worship and elevated to a Marian shrine in 1964, when the Romanesque-modern tower was equipped with a concert of automatic starting bells.
Inside the church are located:
- Major Baroque altar with a tabernacle, restored by the sculptor G. Finocchiaro of Acireale;
- a bronze crucifix by the sculptor E. Tesei, side dell`altare;
- a painting by Simon Stock painter of M.P. Rallo of Catania;
- a picture of Elia, which reconstructs biblical l`episodio the cloud;
- in small square, the Via Crucis of M.P. Rallo;
- the Santa Teresa framework of the Child Jesus: Rallo canvas of a painter, offered by Emma Ms Mirabella, in memory of his brother arch. John, designer and director of the Sanctuary restoration, completed in 1964.
